  • Are you one of those people with a gym subscription but never completed their course? Well, don’t worry. Now, you can be physically fit in your own home with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

Today, we will cover the story of former Aaptiv CEO Ethan Agarwal. For those who are unfamiliar, he founded a popular fitness app that helped millions of people get fit easily.

Agarwal left the executive position at Aaptiv in December 2020. Afterward, Zach Rabin, a longtime employee, took over as the company’s CEO. Let’s learn more about the company and Ethan in detail, shall we?

  • Early Life and Education

Born in 1985, Ethan began his entrepreneurial journey at an early age. He considers his father, Vinod Agarwal, his mentor. Vinod was a professor at McGill, and he built a company in the semiconductor software space.

Ethan learned about tech and business from his father. He completed his primary education at The Harker School in 2003. Then, he went to Johns Hopkins University to study for his B.A. (major in Economics and Political Science and minor in Business) from 2003 to 2006.

After graduation, the California native started his career as an investment banker at 21. His parents played a major role in shaping his career.

Agarwal pursued his Master of Business Administration in Finance from Wharton University (2009 – 2011).

  • Combining years of Experience To Start A Company

Agarwal has always been really excited about innovation. He was always concerned about forming a company, so he decided to spend the first ten years of his career learning the fundamentals of building businesses.

Ethan spent 2 years in investment banking, 2 years getting his MBA, and 3 years at McKinsey, understanding the operational side of team building. Likewise, he also worked at a hedge fund, collecting enough experience.

So, he combined all that when he started his first company, Aaptiv. Let’s say that he was inspired from within, just like Strava CEO Michael Martin, Zing AI CEO Tanya Parfenyuk, Juggernaut CEO Chad Wesley Smith, etc.

Why did Ethan Agarwal Start Aaptiv?

Like any other consultant, Agarwal used to travel a lot. In the process, he gained a lot of weight due to a lack of time for proper exercise.

  • As a consumer of online training programs, he found access to those apps expensive. In the meantime, he realized that fitness can be as effective as audio. Thus, he created a business model with an affordable subscription.

The CEO offered live classes but later found that people preferred on-demand courses, so he always made his content available. He also realized the need for guidance and started developing training programs, which led to improvement.

Ethan founded Aaptiv in January 2016, and the company quickly became a leading premium digital fitness content provider. Through its innovative audio fitness classes, Aaptiv transformed how people train and exercise.

With over 100 employees in its New York office, Aaptiv raised over $50M from leading venture capital firms and gained nearly 200,000 paying subscribers.

  • Aaptiv quickly generated over $100 million in revenue. However, Agarwal left the company to start The Coterie, which develops software for private fund GPS and LPs and provides investment solutions.
