Meet The Melbourne Startup WorkRex Founders: The Story!

The story of WorkRex began in a Melbourne sharehouse with three housemates during the COVID lockdown. WorkRex is the idea of three visionaries, Lance Qian, Jing Chen, and Myron Liu. All three of them are from New Zealand.

  • During the lockdown, these three housemates realized how small/medium businesses struggled to manage customer/employee demands.

WorkRex started as a recruitment platform offering to help local small and medium businesses. But now, they are aiming to tackle greater challenges.

Let’s meet the Melbourne startup WorkRex founders:

Founder No. 1: Lance Qian, A Civil Engineer With an Interest In Business

A former consumer retail and a McKinsey associate, Lance Qian is one of the co-founders of WorkRex. He is one academically gifted individual who was in the top 1% of the New Zealand students for the 2013 NCEA Scholarship exam.

  • In 2014, Qian attended the University of Melbourne to study Master’s in Civil Engineering. And guess what? He was awarded the Global Scholars Award (2015) and ExxonMobil Award for Excellence (2017) for his outstanding academic results.

For his Master’s, Qian graduated with first-class honors in 2018. Meanwhile, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in finance after accepting a one-year exchange program at Rutgers University in New Jersey, U.S.

Talking about his professional career, Lance began working at McKinsey & Company as an intern and business analyst. Afterward, he worked at Redbubble as their strategy manager.

Since March 2023, Lance Qian has been one of the major people of the WorkRex platform.

  • Founder No. 2: Jing Chen, An Optometrist

Workrex’s female co-founder, Jing Chen, is a passionate optometrist. Under Workrex, she co-founded ‘Locum.ly’ platform to help those practicing optometry and pharmacy.

Unlike Lance, Chen studied in New Zealand and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Optometry from the University of Auckland in 2017. Likewise, she was awarded the Raymond Harry Hawkins Prize for her optometry research in January 2017.

  • Founder No.3: Myron Liu, A Senior Software Engineer

Unlike Lance and Jing, who have previous experience in retail sales, WorkRex’s third co-founder, Myron Liu, had only worked in the software industry.

Liu studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2019. He began his career as a software engineer intern at Arista Networks, where Billionaire Stan Druckenmiller had once worked in his youth.
