OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Believes Super AI is Imminent

According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT, the future will involve devising new ways to create AI models instead of merely training them on knowledge already compiled.

Altman believes super AI is imminent but does not think AI models require increasing data. He admitted uncertainty about how the technology will progress in intelligence once it exceeds that limit.

At the 20th Aspen Concepts Symposium in Colorado, Altman likened the rise of artificial intelligence to the dawn of agriculture or the development of machinery in the industrial era (NBCUniversal News Group, the parent company of NBC News, is the festival’s media partner.)

People are going to use these tools to invent the future that we all live in, he told NBC News anchor Lester Holt.

What one person could already do before ChatGPT existed is an impressive leap, and by the time we get to GPT-6 or -7, what one person can do will be incredibly increased. And I’m very excited about that. I think that is the story of the world getting better.

The Creative Fields Of Art And Entertainment

Nevertheless, employees in numerous sectors, particularly those in the creative fields of art and entertainment, do not share Altman’s enthusiasm for the potential of ever-advancing AI tools.

It has repeatedly been alleged that OpenAI and others use copyrighted material from newspapers, artists, and creators to train the AI models.

Many worry about the implications of deepfakes and other AI-generated misinformation currently spreading on the internet, where too little regulation has been provided both by technology platforms and governments.

Altman Believes Super AI is Imminent

Altman believes super AI is imminent; Sam said it was “inevitable” that AI technology would be capable of “much more” nefarious uses.

As the first elections around the globe in which AI is a key technological component take place, Altman said, deepfakes remain top of mind, and there may even be other ways people try to misuse AI that OpenAI hasn’t caught wind of yet.

OpenAI has also received recognition for its temporarily suspended voice assistant Sky, which many online users noted sounded remarkably similar to the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson.
OpenAI mentioned that Sky’s voice was not a replication of Johansson’s, and Sky’s natural voice was distinct from the one the company hired Johansson for.

Other Statements

I don’t think of it as a race. I understand why that’s a very compelling, dramatic way to talk about it. I think that there may be a race between nation-states at some point, but the companies that are developing this now, I think everyone feels the stakes, the need to get this right.

Altman believes super AI is imminent because, despite fears of AI advancement, AI will only serve as tools and not autonomous beings. He sees AI development as a gradual evolution without an end goal.
