Instead of competing against Nvidia to be the fastest GPU card manufacturer, AMD has instead decided to provide a gaming experience for everyone.
AMD plans to skip their next gen flagship GPUs, shifting away from the high-stakes race for GPU supremacy and zeroing in on what matters most, the gamers.
Do you want to know more about what this implies for gaming and GPUs in the future? Let’s explore.
AMD Plans To Skip Their Next-Gen Flagship GPUs
AMD no longer wants to compete with Nvidia for the title of the fastest consumer GPU. Instead, they are aiming at the mid-end and low-end GPU markets, as they are the most dominant in expenditure.
As AMD plans to skip their next gen flagship GPUs, the company’s SVP, Jack Huynh, had something to share. At IFA 2024, he highlighted the shift in focus from developing new products to achieving scale and market share.

AMD Is Focusing On Gamers
Instead of trying to produce the fastest GPU, AMD will target a wide range of consumers who can easily afford their graphics cards. AMD plans to skip their next gen flagship GPUs even though it would benefit hardcore gamers looking for an alternative to Nvidia’s flagship graphics card.
According to Huynh, game developers would also be more motivated to develop and optimize their games to run better on AMD hardware. Good thinking, AMD.
This approach is similar to what AMD has done with modern game consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, where scale contributed to success.

They aim to cover about 40-50% of the market via releasing affordable GPUs that could be produced in large quantities.
Although there are speculations that AMD may not be producing top-tier GPUs for now, the company is not opposed to returning to the high-end market at some point in the future.

AMD Out Of The Race: Nvidia Is Still The Boss!
Nvidia remains the king of high-end GPUs. While AMD may have great plans for 2025, this year, they are focusing on their RX 8000 series and the next-gen portable chips.
Huynh added that gaming will remain a major focus for AMD, even if they are not necessarily targeting Nvidia’s high-end GPUs right now.
However, this strategy could enable Nvidia to dominate the high-end market, which might lead to high prices for premium GPUs.
So, it’s best that AMD establishes a greater number of users before returning to competing with others in the higher tier. We will know more about after AMD officially releases the RX 8000 series.
