  • Mistral AI, a French company selling artificial intelligence (AI) products, produces open-source large language models. The company’s current valuation is around $5 billion.

    Who Founded Mistral AI?

    Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothee Lacroix founded Mistral AI in April 2023. The founders are previous employees of Google DeepMind and Meta Platforms.




  • The co-founders met while studying at Ecole Polytechnique. The name mistral means strong wind that blows in France.

    As of March 2024, two models had been published and made available as weights. Three other models, Small, Medium, and Large, are available only via API.

    On September 27, 2023, the firm released its language processing model “Mistral 7B” under the free Apache 2.0 license. This model has 7 billion parameters, which is relatively tiny compared to its competitors.

    Some valuable sources recently reported the news, but it is still unclear which financers Mistral has spoken to about the new funding round.

    Recently, in February 2024, American tech giant Microsoft invested $16 million in the French company. This partnership led to Microsoft making Mistral’s AI model available through the Azure cloud computing platforms.

  • Previous Fundraising And Existing Investors

    French startup Mistral AI seeking funds is the talk of the town nowadays. However, this is not the first time the company is carrying out the funding.

    In June 2023, the startup launched its first fundraising worth $117 million. The investors include Eric Schmidt, JCDecaus, Xavier Niel, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

    Similarly, in December 2023, Mistral announced the raise of $428 million as part of its second fundraising. This round included investors such as BNP Paribas, Salesforce, and Andreessen Horowitz.
