Skates spent his childhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. In 2006, he attended the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the same institution Charles Moury and Conor Madigan attended.

The American national studied B.S. Bioengineering and graduated in 2010. At the time, he was part of the Science and Engineering Business Club, Camp Kesem, ATS, and Frisbee. He was also part of the 2009 and 2010 Batttlecode first-place teams.

    Career Beginning And Founding Sonalight

After graduating from MIT, Amplitude founder Spenser Skates joined DRW Trading Group in July 2010 as an Algorithm Trader and Researcher in Chicago, Illinois.

However, Skates left DRW in 2011 to begin a new journey as a startup founder. Therefore, in 2011, he and his friend Curtis Liu created and founded a voice recognition startup called Sonalight.

  • According to Skates, Sonalight was a version of Apple’s Siri before Siri came into existence. The company was accepted into the renowned startup accelerator Y Combinator, received investment capital, and saw 500,000 downloads of its app. It was a perfect beginning for any fledgling business.

Still, Spenser and his partner were unsatisfied with their idea and creation. They thought it was pretty good but not the best of the best.

Stakes and Liu found that although consumers initially used the app, they did not return for more interactions. Sonalight was a concept in the 95th percentile. Though most ideas are awful, this one was perfect. Nevertheless, they abandoned the plan and pursued a 99th percentile idea.

Therefore, the co-founders decided to shut the startup rather than enjoy the minimum success brought by Sonalight.

After scrapping Sonalight entirely in May 2012, Spenser Stakes, Curtis Lue, and Jeffrey Wang co-founded the San Francisco-based company, Amplitude Analytics in June 2012.

According to multiple reports, Sonalight’s custom analytics technologies served as the foundation for Amplitude. Even though Spenser and friends took a considerable risk, it eventually paid off.

At Y Combinator, the analytics tool received a fantastic response, shifting Liu and Skate’s focus towards Amplitude. The company was founded in 2012 but was launched officially as the analytics platform in 2014.

  • Regarding the decision to begin Amplitude, Skates said,

It wasn’t even that hard of a decision. We’re going to go do something else instead. There was difficulty in that. But it was better at that point to just move on and instead focus on something we could really put our energy in.
