  • AI and its branches have expanded rapidly over the past few years. Thus, emerging companies are coming up with brilliant ideas. One such company, Cartken, plans to transform autonomous vehicle technology. So, how successful has it been?

Today, we will discuss Cartken founders and their strategy for using artificial intelligence to excel in logistics and tech environments. Their startup offers autonomous delivery robots with sensors and cameras.

As simple as it sounds, these robots can stop instantly to avoid collisions and choose the safest routes. If you want to learn more, we suggest you read the article until the end.

  • All Five Cartken Founders Previously worked at Google

Cartken’s story started in mid-2018 when similar like-minded people approached the idea of autonomous vehicle technology. Google was trying to add Bookbot, a robot delivery system, to its portfolio. Unfortunately, the plan didn’t succeed.

However, at Google’s ‘Area 120 Incubator’ (a place for product experiments), Bookbot brought together a team of experts. Cartken was officially founded in the fall of 2019 by engineers from the Bookbot program and a logistic expert.

Although Google pulled back from Bookbot sidewalk robot delivery, the founding team saw an opportunity for its robots to navigate pedestrian-filled sidewalks. Similarly, they saw their robots’ potential for indoor industrial environments, including factories, labs, and airports.

Now, without any ado, let’s meet the Cartken founders. Christian Bersch, Jonas Witt, and Jake Stelman are the former co-founders of Google’s Area 120 Robotics Project. Later, Anjali Naik Jindal and Ryan Quinlan joined the team.

  • Thus, these people came together to build Cartken as a functional, sustainable, and goal-oriented organization.

    Christian Bersch: Introducing The CEO

Let’s start with one of Cartken’s co-founders and the starting CEO. He is a dynamic individual with an impressive background. Let’s say he and Skild AI CEO Deepak Pathak have some similarities in building efficient robots.

Bersch attended Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, where he graduated with an Industrial Engineering degree (focused on Computer Science) and a Dipl.-Wi.-Ing (equivalent to a Master’s degree).

In 2007, he attended RMIT University for a one-year exchange program with the School of Computer Science.

In 2011, Christian joined Google as an Associate Product Manager for Google Maps Business. He was later promoted to product manager and, eventually, team lead for Area 120 Robotics Project.

Bersh worked at Google from November 2011 to July 2019 for nearly eight years.

    Jake Stelman: Cartken’s Vice-President

Jake, a University of California graduate, is a software/hardware engineer and a former designer.

  • Stelman started his career as a designer in 2013 and joined Facebook as a software engineer in 2015. Afterward, he joined X Development (formerly Google X) as a hardware engineer.

Jake was named one of the engineers at Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP). Then, he joined Google’s Area 120 incubator startup as its co-founder.

Jonas Witt: Cartken’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Jonas Witt, a former PhD candidate at Hamburg University of Technology, worked as a research assistant at the same institute. Afterward, he worked at Bosch North America as a research engineer leading the team working on mapping/localization for autonomous cars.

Witt’s expertise in autonomous cars led him to work for X: The Moonshot Factory. He was a senior software developer writing complex algorithms to train advanced robots there.

Like his colleagues, Witt was involved with the Area 120 project, where he served as its chief technology officer. Unsurprisingly, he is Cartken’s CTO, and he co-founded the startup with his colleagues.

Ryan Quinlan: Cartken’s Advisor and Flexcar’s COO

Ryan Quinlan, who graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in economics, is Cartken’s advisor. Unlike his other colleagues, Quinlan worked at Google in the Logistics department. He was, in fact, the head of product operations.

A tech veteran with over 20 years of experience, Quinlan began his career as a senior analyst at Union Pacific. Likewise, he has worked as the director of employee relations and corporate strategy at Skywest Airlines and BGI Worldwide Logistics.

In 2010, Ryan joined Amazon as its senior operations/pathways manager. Afterward, he oversaw Google’s logistics from 2013 until 2019.

  • After joining Cartken as its advisor and co-founder, Quinlan explored other positions. For example, he worked as a chief commercial officer for DP World and vice president for Gopuff.

Besides being one of the cartken founders, Ryan is the chief operating officer for Flexcar, a luxury vehicle lease company.

From 2013 until 2015, Anjali worked as Google’s product operations manager. She also has experience as a product management director and VP of operations.

Since April 2020, Naik has been Cartken’s chief operating officer. Likewise, she is the only female executive among the majority male cartken founders.

Regarding her academics, Anjali graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a science and business administration degree.
