  • Have you heard of the Moondrop Cosmo headphones? The Moondrop Cosmo is a sophisticated headphone that will surely satisfy audiophiles by providing quality sound at a premium price.

Cosmo has combined Moondrop’s signature attention to detail with advanced acoustic technology, as manifested in precision engineering and high-fidelity audio performance. It’s sleek and modern, and the ear cups make it comfortable even after hours of usage.

Besides, the headphones have a pretty even sound signature: rich in bass, clear in the middle, and high in the highs, therefore fitting for all genres of music. Given Moondrop’s commitment to audiophile-level products, Cosmo is probably one of the best choices for a picky listener.

  • Features of  the Cosmo Headphone

The Moondrop Cosmo headphone is a set of open-back planar magnetic headphones that use a similarly sized 100mm FDT driver with an etched pure silver thin film circuit, similar to those in the VENUS and the PARA.

This time, Moondrop has opted for their thinnest diaphragm yet, measuring at 0.500n. Appropriately, it is referred to as a Nanoscale Ultra-slim Diaphragm.

The COSMO is rated with a fairly low impedance value of 15Ω±15% (@1kHz) and a sensitivity rating of 100 dB/Vrms (@1kHz), which is increasingly commonplace now with newer planar headphones releases.

On paper, the COSMO is a moderately demanding set of headphones, but as you will find out on page 2 of the review, they still require a capable amplifier to sound at their best.

  • Moondrop’s Design

The COSMO comes in a sleek silver matte coating. Its framework strongly resembles the PARA and VENUS.

Nonetheless, specific components and the cable have been enhanced. The vented design on the panels isn’t as flashy as on the VENUS but has a more uniform and low-profile aesthetic.

The structure is quite rigid overall and has a modern vibe. Nevertheless, we trust that Moondrop will contemplate altering the color scheme or final touches on their higher-end positioned products to make them appear even more unique for upcoming releases.

  • Price & Availability

The $899 COSMO is MOONDROP’s third pair of Planar Magnetic headphones and current flagship, following the release of the VENUS and the PARA in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The Moondrop Cosmo headphone’s design shares some features with its predecessors, but there are also some driver upgrades to match the new flagship moniker and higher price tag. The COSMO requires a lot more power than the PARA.

    Tech Review & Details

    Stock Cable:

The 100% copper cable terminates with 4.4mm connectors featuring a robust wire gauge and comes with a 6.35mm single-ended converter adapter.

The adapter is included in the stock accessories for headphone cables. It’s a nice solution for those with SE-only amplifiers who don’t want to throw in an additional SE-terminated cable.

This 8-strand cable beautifully complements the overall design with a stylish, appealing, square braided finish.

The stock cable’s original copper wiring enhances the COSMO’s overall treble performance, providing a more well-rounded sound. If you prefer a slightly more vibrant signature and a more expansive response, this would be an excellent option.

    Sound Impressions:

The MOONDROP COSMO was given 100 hours of burn-in, and the impressions below were compiled using the FiiO R9, K19, RME’s ADI 2 Pro, the Soncoz SGA1, and the Shanling M5 Ultra for both source and amplification.

    Bass:

  • Testing on the FiiO K19 shows that the bass is moderately deep while maintaining good agility and texture. Conversely, on less powerful gears, the bass may appear thinner and less extended.

When sufficiently powered, the bass has good fullness, which helps the COSMO sound more expressive with improved control over decay. Bass instruments have a powerful and close-knit sound with enough space, although they might sound boxy with the default pads when the bassline becomes more intricate.

The K19’s vocal sounds less ‘brilliant,’ though the body is more clearly defined and separated, which helps darker voices and male vocalists sound more expressive and natural. Giving both ends of the spectrum a slight nudge in EQ further enhances transparency, air, and balance.

The lower, fundamental bass frequencies are more pronounced to enhance the perceived definition and depth. Again, it is recommended that the pads be swapped out with a more perforated option, which could help the bass sound more defined and airier.

  • Mids:

The midrange frequencies, or the vocal, are the focus of the tuning. When properly energized, the full and layered midrange frequencies stand out over the bass line. The increased upper midrange also gives more vitality to softer voices for better penetration through the sound blend.

The piano sound in the middle range is solid and very accurate, while the viola sound is authentic and rich in texture, with some pleasing intricacies.

The singing feels personal, as though the expert is right before you. A small bump in the upper vocal frequencies energizes and sweetens them, followed by a sharp roll-off.

  • By boosting the higher frequencies, the vocal sounds are more naturally extended, but if you use the stock pads, they may sound overly compressed, with the top end attenuated.

    Treble:

The Moondrop Cosmo headphones work well if you focus only on the vocal part. Listening to ACG, gaming BGMs, or folk songs that sound sweet and rounded allows your focus to shift fully to the vocal and its harmonics.

Switching to an SPC cable and replacing the original pads with a more open set will help restore the spaciousness, allowing the high frequencies to extend more smoothly and organically.

  • After these tweaks, the focus is still on the lower frequencies, which is excellent for vocal fundamentals but may require a bright, powerful amplifier to balance it out. Some equalizing may also be necessary for classical music/jazz and genres requiring more energy up the top end and a more sub-bass presence.

    Soundstage:

Elements across the mid-lows sound clear on the COSMO, and the vocals also hold together a clear image with the chest resonance and nasal frequencies emphasized.

The mid-lows are to be more intensive to give the vocals more body and stronger contrast from background instrumental imaging. This could further boost the imaging clarity, especially when driven on average amplifiers, where channel separation might be weaker.

  • Due to the mid-centric tuning, the staging of Moondrop Cosmo headphones is rather intimate, especially with the stock pads that limit the expansion on the x-axis. That’s all about the Moondrop Cosmo’s; keep visiting the site to be updated.
