A Robot in Human Form! The Japanese Tensai, Hiroshi Ishiguro, once made an exact copy of himself. But don’t worry, he didn’t use any cloning mechanism.

So, in 2024, people are asking where is Hiroshi Ishiguro now. Well, the roboticist/engineer has been involved in the creation of multiple humans resembling robots.

Follow this article until the end to learn about his whereabouts, life, work, and accomplishments. See if he has built any innovative human androids in 2024 that show exceptional human-like behavior or expressions.

A Brief Overview About the Japanese Engineer

  • Born on October 23, 1963, in Kansai, Japan, Ishiguro wanted to be an artist as he loved oil painting.
  • However, the Japanese national attended the University of Yamanashi and obtained a degree in computer science. Similarly, he did his graduate and doctorate studies at Osaka University.
  • Hiroshi has dedicated his life and knowledge to upgrading the standard of robotics.
  • Ishiguro has received multiple awards for his contribution, including the 2011 Osaka Culture Prize, Best Humanoid Award at RoboCup 2006, and many more.
  • The Roboticist gave seminars on Robots to institutions, including Wakayama University and Kyoto University. Also, he was a fellow scholar at the University of California from 1998-1999.

The Man Who Made His Look-Alike Robot – Geminoid

In 2006, Hiroshi stunned the world when he unveiled Geminoid HI-1 robot. HI-1 is an Android copy of the creator. It also reproduces the head movements and the voice of Ishiguro.

Japan has never failed to amaze the world, whether it’s their 2024 Nikon Z8 Camera, Tokyo’s Eco VPR, or a Canon Pixma TS202.

The humanoid robot was created in collaboration with Japanese animatronics company Kokoro and Ishiguro.

The Japanese robotics expert used silicone rubber, powerful electronics, and pneumatic actuators to construct his mechanical counterpart.

After its inception, five different variants were built, but their appearance was the same as that of their superior predecessor.

According to multiple sources, Ishiguro used strands of hair from his scalp for the wig. Similarly, the vocabulary Geminoid comes from the Latin word Geminus, which means twin.

Some of the excellent features are mentioned below.

  • Arms
  • Fully Autonomous
  • Legs
  • Hands
  • Lifelike
  • Speech
  • Teleoperated
  • Vision
  • Breathing and blinking movements

The stunning appearance of the humanoid robot was created by CG and was designed to possess the features of beautiful people’s faces. Moreover, text-to-speech technology was used to generate the voice.

Can you believe ERICA works as a receptionist at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International in Kyoto, Japan? Amazing, isn’t it?

Furthermore, according to multiple sources, ERICA is also set to appear as an actress in a science fiction action film titled ‘b.’

So where is Hiroshi Ishiguro now?

Ishiguro has been a major key person working in the Department of Innovation Systems at Osaka University since 1991. Similarly, he is also the director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory.

The Japanese national must be busy creating yet another humanoid robot, probably better than his previous works.

Also, on his official Twitter (X) account, Ishiguro has been constantly sharing and reminding people about EXPO2025, scheduled for March 2025.

Similarly, EXPO2025’s Twitter handle recently shared a video where the Japanese engineer was seen conversing with an android robot.

During the conversation, the robot asks Hiroshi what it would be like in fifty years. To which the creator replies:

You might be in another body.

Therefore, it looks like Hiroshi Ishiguro now plans to upgrade the humanoid robots even further. Still, our favorite is his clone, the Geminoid HI-1. What about yours?
