What does Nvidia’s latest company acquisition suggest about the future of AI? What can OctoAI’s advanced tools bring to Nvidia’s already strong AI suite?
Nvidia acquires OctoAI to shake up the AI landscape, a company that originated from the University of Washington.
Stick with us as we explain this major acquisition and its implications for the future of the AI market.
A Bit About OctoAI
OctoAI, formerly OctoML, is a University of Washington spinout company that started in 2019.
The company mainly focuses on developing applications that enhance the performance of machine learning models.
Nvidia acquires OctoAI, valued at $900 million in 2021, when it raised $85 million in funding.
However, although it is valued very high, its revenue was in the low single-digit millions last year.
The fate of OctoAI’s more than 100 employees is still unknown, but its investors and managers look forward to the partnership with Nvidia.
OctoAI’s CEO is UW professor Luis Ceze, who started the company with four other people and will become the VP of AI systems software at Nvidia.

It has been estimated that Nvidia could spend over $250 million on the deal, while OctoAI was considered a $900 million company during its funding in 2021.
Venture capital markets have become somewhat constrained, and it has become challenging for companies like OctoAI to attract investments even though AI is a leading trend.
Nvidia Expands AI Footprint
The startup OctoAI will close its cloud services on October 31.
Over the years, OctoAI has partnered with other big players such as AMD, AWS, and Nvidia, which makes sense since both enhance AI architecture.
This latest acquisition is Nvidia’s fifth for the year and represents a significant step up in its AI business.
Nvidia has pursued an acquisition strategy that regulators are concerned could stifle competition in AI hardware and software. Still, its investors think OctoAI will have a much greater influence as part of Nvidia.
