  • The success story of a woman who went from an Olympiad silver medallist to the founder of a tech startup is a true story of determination and the pursuit of excellence.

Pika founder Guo Wenjing, a talent from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, is receiving compliments in China for her superb intelligence and successful resume.

Born into a well-to-do family, Guo’s mother is an MIT graduate. Her father, Guo Huaqiang, is an ex-chairman of SunGard Technology.

  • Early History Of Pika Founder Guo Wenjing

At 15, Guo flew to the U.S. to tutor children in math, for which she was paid $2,000. She started a programming club, and in her spare time, she taught American kids how to program.

As for extracurricular activities, Wenjing likes sailing, skiing, and being an emergency rescuer. She joined her school’s debating society and participated in an English debate in Shanghai.

Pika Founder Guo Wenjing also attended summer camps at some top universities, including Berkeley and Harvard.

Wenjing said she was a very good writer when she was younger and won many awards. She wasn’t good at math, so being a good writer wasn’t cool enough anymore.

  • The Chinese native felt that since programming and math were male-dominated, excelling in math as a girl felt more challenging. Nevertheless, she overcame the obstacles and is now known as the “Genius Girl from China.”

Journey From China To Harvard and Standford

The Pika founder began her journey by scoring a silver medal at the 2015 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), which paved the way for her to study at Harvard University.

Wenjing completed her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and master’s degree in computer science at Harvard University. During her college internship, she worked with Microsoft and Google companies.

    The Story Behind Pika Startup

During the 2022 AI Film Festival in New York City, Wenjing participated along with her Stanford PhD classmates. Unfortunately, they failed to win the event.

The existing video tools at the time led Guo and her colleagues to think about an efficient AI video generation tool. Eventually, in April 2023, Guo and Chenlin built “Pika 1.0.”

  • Pika took off relatively quickly and, within no time, collected $135 million from the market, valued at $470 million. The startup also helped her family’s company, Sunyard Technology’s stocks, to increase by more than 20% within a week, earning the nickname “daughter concept stock. ”

Pika, the AI app, converts text and images to video with many functions.
